The ham in this easy potato soup recipe can be substituted with a number of different kinds of meat if you don't like ham. For example : smoked sausage, bacon, beef, venison, chicken or even rabbit and birds like quail.

  • 4 C. Red Potatoes, peeled & cubed
  • 1 Medium Yellow Onion, Chopped
  • 2 Carrots, peeled & shredded
  • 1 Celery stalk, chopped
  • 3 TBS. Butter
  • 3 C. Chicken Broth
  • 3 C. Milk
  • 3 TBS. Flour
  • 1/2 tsp. Black Pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. Dry Mustard
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 Stock Pot or Large Pot
  • Ladle
  • Dry measuring spoons & cups
  • Liquid measuring cup
  • Chef Knife / Butcher Knife
  • Vegetable Shredder

    Preparation for this Potato Soup Recipe with Ham

  • Peel and cube 4 cups of potatoes and place them in a large bowl with enough cold water to cover the potatoes.

  • Peel and chop 1 medium sized onion and 1 celery stalk (with leaves).

  • Peel and shred 2 carrots and set them aside.

  • Chop ham into 1/2 inch cubes.

  • Mix 3 TBS. Flour with an equal amount of luke warm water.


    Cooking Instructions for this Potato and Ham Soup Recipe

  • Combine 3 cups chicken broth, 3 tablespoons butter, 1 chopped celery stalk, 1/2 teaspoon dried mustard, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper and 1 chopped medium yellow onion in a pot, stir well and simmer on medium high heat.

  • Add 3 tablespoons flour and an equal amount of luke warm water to a small bowl and mix well with a fork till it's smooth. Then pour the mixture into the large pot and stir well and continue simmering on medium high heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

    Adding the flour early in the cooking process will help get rid of the flour taste but still thicken the soup.

  • After 15 minutes add 4 cups cubed potatoes, 3 cups milk, 2 shredded carrots and simmer on medium high heat for 15 more minutes stirring occasionally.

    After the last 15 minutes stir well and add salt to taste.

    Now your potato and ham soup recipe is almost complete, pour in a bowl and garnish with cheddar cheese, dried parsley or cayenne pepper.
